Hello everyone, Minor research to report: I came across this dutch name on my travels just now 'van Daalen'. There is a resemblance, yes? Philip

There are so many names that seem similar. My father (Elizabeth(Annie) Datlen's Son always implied a German ancestry.

Eulyce Arkleysmith.

I also favour the German origin of the name. Although I cannot say for certain I believe the original surname was Dietlein or Dieterlin and if you do a simple search on www.myfamily.org you will find that there are hundreds of records originating from the German provinces.

Also if you search for Johannes Dieterlin this will return over 50 matches mainly from the Wuerttemberg region of Germany!
